So how did this global party get started? Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, later crowned King Ludwig I, asked his men to attend his wedding celebration to Princess Teresa of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810.

The annual Munich festival still takes place in the original square, called the Theresienwiese, just outside the city gates. The agricultural exhibition remains an event, although it only takes place once every three years.
The beerhouse and food traditions that began in 1818 continue to this day and are perhaps the most flourishing aspect of Oktoberfest.
Modern holidays have replaced small tents with large brewery-sponsored breweries that can seat up to 5,000 people. The party also develops into a 16-day extravaganza, which ends on the first Sunday in October.
The first week of the festival sees the Costume and Archers Parade, attended by some 7,000 performers – groups in traditional costume and period uniforms, marching bands, archers, thoroughbred horses, and other livestock, ancient chariots, and many floats – parade through the streets of downtown Munich exhibits a diversity of local, regional and national customs.
On the second Sunday of Oktoberfest, there is an open big band concert with about 400 musicians who all make up the Oktoberfest band.
